Team Coordinator Job Description

PLEASE NOTE: This position is only open to candidates living in the Denver Metro Area. Applications must be submitted no later than Monday, January 26th at 5pm.

Position Summary

The Team Coordinator supports, trains and leads a team of Fellows during the Conexão Mundo (World Connection) Program. This is a temporary contract position, requiring a 26-week commitment in several phases: orientation and training phase in February-March (25 hours), 10-12 hours of work per week from March-Departure (Phase I), 4 weeks of full-time work in Brazil (all of June, mid-June to mid-July, or all of July, Phase II) and 8-10 hours of work per week for 6 weeks following the month in Brazil (Phase III). For some teams, the Team Coordinator works collaboratively with a co-leader, an Education Facilitation Specialist (EFS); for small teams, the Team Coordinator will be the sole leader.

Key Responsibilities

Work as a “creative partner”

Team leaders must actively engage with US-Brazil Connect central staff, the program manager, and other team leaders in person and via a Facebook group.

Attend Required Training Sessions

  • A two-day weekend workshop in Denver, Colorado for all team leaders (Team Coordinators and EFSs) on February 7 and 8, 2015.
  • Bimonthly leadership meetings (designated Tuesdays, February through May) and 2-3 debrief meetings (designated Tuesdays 6pm-8pm, August through September).

Team Leadership

The Team Coordinator must prepare and lead a designated team of fellows through the Conexão Mundo program’s 3 phases, including 4 weeks in Brazil. Team Coordinators will help prepare fellows by developing each fellow's English coaching skills, knowledge of Brazilian language and culture, understanding of program guidelines, and global civic awareness. Team leadership responsibilities include:

  • Interacting with their teams primarily online (via Facebook groups and Google Hangouts) and at a 2-day, in-person workshop on a weekend in April or May 2015.
  • May require travel outside of Denver; if so, travel expenses will be covered by US-Brazil Connect
  • Planning and facilitating five, 3-hour online training sessions for fellows in the months before going to Brazil.
  • Managing logistical needs prior to departure and on the ground in Brazil. This includes, but it is not limited to, ensuring fellows meet all the necessary requirements to travel to Brazil; keeping track of key documents, such as copies of fellows’ passports and health insurance forms.
  • Working with the Brazilian Coordinator and US-Brazil Connect Program Manager to ensure that details are arranged for time in Brazil, such as local transportation, meals, accommodation, and adequate spaces and supplies for English classes, assemblies and snack time.

Education Leadership

Together with the EFS, the TC is responsible for making Conexão Mundo a valuable education experience for fellows and students alike:

  • Overseeing the Conexão Mundo program’s reporting requirements, such as recording student attendance in Brazil, aggregating student evaluations by coaches, and writing a final site report; lead (or co-lead with the EFS) evaluation of fellows in each phase of the program.
  • Building relationships with participating Brazilian students and help them build confidence communicating in English.
  • Serving as a model of healthy team dynamics by adhering to US-Brazil Connect policies and procedures, as well as to each team’s specific agreements.
Note: Team Coordinators do NOT need to have prior travel to Brazil and/or know Portuguese at time of application.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Strong leadership skills required, including demonstrated experience leading groups
  • Highly organized with strong multi-tasking skills and attention to detail; interest in coordination, logistics and details
  • Desire to connect with young American adults and Brazilian teenagers
  • Energetic team player with ability to create an inclusive environment
  • Ability and interest in using social media, including Facebook and Google applications (Drive, Hangout, etc.)
  • Intercultural experience; experience with international exchange programs
  • Responsible, reliable and dependable
  • Ability to anticipate problems before they arise and problem-solve in a timely manner
  • Ability to recognize own scope of responsibility and know when to escalate relevant issues to Program Manager
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility and desire to travel to Brazil for one month during the summer
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and change required; ability to stay organized within dynamic situations and communicate diplomatically across linguistic and cultural barriers.
  • Ability to attend all US-Brazil Connect workshops and the Denver-based, bimonthly meetings in person (not via distance)
  • Portuguese language skills are an asset, but are not a requirement of this position

Compensation

This is a part-time, temporary contract position. The Team Coordinator will receive a modest stipend from US-Brazil Connect. US-Brazil Connect covers the cost of a roundtrip airline ticket to Brazil and a Brazilian visa. While in Brazil, all meals, lodging in a hotel, health insurance and local transportation are also covered by the Brazilian Confederation of Industry.
