Senior Fellow Position
After a very successful 2014 program year, the central US-Brazil Connect team is offering highly-competitive Senior Fellowship positions.
Senior fellows fulfill all functions associated with the US-Brazil Connect 2015 Fellowship and, additionally, supports Team Leaders as directed. This is only open to individuals who successfully completed the US-Brazil Connect 2013 or 2014 Fellowships. The position requires approximately 10 hours per week from February to departure for Brazil, one month full-time in Brazil (June or July), and 8 hours per week for 6 weeks following the program in Brazil. The Senior Fellow’s primary function is to model the fellowship for new 2015 Fellows and provide support to the Team Coordinator and Education Facilitation Specialist as directed. This position reports to the Team Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet all expectations of fellowship and coaching role, including adhering to weekly coaching deadlines, completing Fellowship assignments, and other tasks. Fellows are not responsible for completing a Pay-It-Forward project. This includes active participation in all of the following:
- Leaders’ Workshop in Denver, Colorado (February 7-8, 2015) (in-person for Colorado based Senior Fellows only)
- 5 team Saturday training sessions (online)
- 1 2-day Fellows’ Weekend Workshop (in-person, location TBD)
- 4 Senior Fellows’ training meetings (online)
- Share and actively model program values and spirit, including creative partnership, willingness to be changed, openness to learning and continuous reflection
- Contribute to building a healthy team by maintaining open, respectful lines of communication and working within team roles and structure
- Collaborate with assigned leader(s) and report to the Team Coordinator. This role does NOT manage or oversee other fellows
- Actively plan and present the 5 Saturday online training sessions in Phase I, in collaboration with team leaders
- Support teams in Phase III with reflection and re-entry
Additional Responsibilities
Based on team needs, individual strengths, and their team leader(s) guidance, Senior Fellows will select and determine several additional areas of support for their team. These commitments will be formalized through a discussion and plan developed in conjunction with the team leaders. The areas for additional responsibilities are:
Program Phases
- Share activities for in the classroom and provided support with coaching plans as needed
- Support the TC with team’s Student Participation Report (SPR)
Phase II
- Develop and/or coordinate optional team outings (cultural, dining, outdoor experiences) during free time
- Support planning and/or coordination of assembly
- Provide logistical support on the ground with the Team Coordinator
- Supporting leaders in making sure the program is successfully completed
Qualifications
In addition to qualifications outlined on the US-Brazil Connect 2015 Fellowship description, Senior Fellows need to have:
- Successfully completed the US-Brazil Connect 2013 or 2014 Fellowship
- Ability to attend all training sessions
- Strong respect for team leadership and roles. Acceptance that this experience will be different from their previous fellowship experience. Changes will include programmatic modifications (program design, structure, and requirements), difference in Brazilian site (hotel, food, local travel arrangements, daily schedule, etc.), and, with some teams, individuals in leadership positions who are new to US-Brazil Connect.
- Energetic team player with ability to create an inclusive environment
- Desire to connect with young American adults and Brazilian teenagers
- Responsible with a proven track record of being reliable and dependable
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability and interest in using a variety of technologies including Facebook and Google (Drive, Hangout, etc.)
- Flexibility and desire to travel to Brazil (one month during summer)
- High tolerance for ambiguity and change required, combined with a good balance of organization and diplomatic communication
- Portuguese language skills are an asset, but are not a requirement of this position
Fellowship Support
This is a Fellowship position. Upon successfully completion, Senior Fellows will receive a modest stipend and will be able to reimburse US-Brazil Connect up to $2,000 for travel expenses. This can include the cost of international airfare, required immunizations, travel health insurance, or passport and visa (if needed). During their time in Brazil, Senior Fellows will receive lodging in a hotel, meals or a meal stipend, local health insurance, and local transportation.
Returning Fellows
Not all returning fellows will be selected to serve as Senior Fellows. However, US-Brazil Connect recognizes the value that their experience and passion will bring to our teams. If an applicant is not selected, but still wishes to return to the fellowship (without the additional travel scholarship and leadership role) they may be eligible for a position as a returning fellow. This role would be the same as first year fellows in the program. If accepted, returning fellows are responsible to cover all of the financial commitments of the fellowship.
